Who are Active in Redbourn (AIR)?

Redbourn Community Newsbites

Active in Redbourn (AIR) is a constituted community group run by volunteers. Our aim is to make Redbourn the healthiest village in Hertfordshire.

We plan to do this by supporting local activities, promoting health and wellbeing for residents and funding relevant special projects.

While Covid-19 is restricting participation in group activities, we have promoted in-home exercises, on-line wellbeing workshops and general help lines. Go here for more coronavirus support

Activities

Active in Redbourn all activities available to Redbourn residents

From sports, keep fit, and horticulture to bowls, drama and bird watching there are Redbourn activities for everyone. They all offer varying degrees of physical and mental exercise.

The less strenous activities do much for general well being and social interaction in the community. See below for more information contact details and links to the activity organisers.

Wellbeing

Care + Logo 2

As a nation, we are being constantly encouraged to improve our health and mental well being. The NHS and others say healthy diets and exercise go a long way to keeping well and minimising health scares.

As well as making residents aware of local activities, a big AIR challenge is to boost their health and mental well being.

We are building access to useful information and support with help and advice from local healthcare practitioners, mental health advisers wellbeing and  specialists.

Watch this short summary of our Live Well with AiR sessions, broadcast during lockdown: Our end of term report.

Cricket

It is said that cricket was first played on the common in Redbourn in 1666. Redbourn Cricket Club was officially founded around 1823, making it one of the oldest village cricket clubs in the country.

We are always keen to welcome new senior players as well, irrespective of ability. For more membership information please see click the button

Horticulture

Growing plants and vegetables helps support physical and mental health. Although not as strenuous as running and cycling, an hour or two working the garden is very good exercise. Gardening appeals to all ages.

As well as tending your own garden you can join local activity groups – Redbourn in Bloom Horticultural Society and Redbourn Allotment Association are looking for new members.

Cycling

Cycling for people of all ages and abilities  is a top Redbourn activity. There are few easier ways to get fit and healthy than to go for a leisurely cycle ride.  There are plenty of cycle routes  of varying distances in and around Redbourn.  The annual Fete du Velo is a great day out on Redbourn Common for cyclists and non-cyclists alike.

Drama

‘Redbourn Players  are a small, but very active, amateur dramatic society, performing major public productions at Redbourn Village Hall twice a year.

As as a small society we are always looking for new (particularly younger) acting members as well as people to work behind the scenes in designing and building sets, scenery and props.
